2004
- The year of the High Roller
The
financial results of Australian media and gambling company PBL
Limited have revealed a substantial dent in casino earnings for year
to December 2004. And the main reason for the reduced revenue was winning
streak enjoyed by high rollers just before Christmas.
A
story reported in The Age, ‘PBL Hit as High Rollers Beat the
Odds February 25 2005’ revealed that a hot streak by high
roller Baccarat players at PBL’s Crown Casino toward the end of
the year, dragged Crown’s annual Baccarat house take rate down to
0.86%, compared to the usual 1.35% (and a whopping 1.74% in 2003).
The lucky high rollers pillaged Crown to the tune of $43
million to have a very happy Christmas indeed.
Crown
Casino in Melbourne is one of the world’s best known high roller
casinos and traditionally makes a substantial portion of their
revenue from big players playing in their Mahogany room and private
gambling suits.
Its
nice to see the casinos getting a taste of their own medicine for a
change…if only for a brief time.
